A Day in the Life of a Missouri Cattle Rancher


Every once in a while, photography gives me the opportunity to step into someone else's world for a day, and this was definitely one of those experiences. I had the opportunity to visit Weigand Ranch in Warrensburg, Missouri, to help capture photographs for an upcoming story in Missouri Life Magazine called A Day in the Life of a Cattle Rancher.

This wasn't a typical photo session. Instead of choosing poses and searching for the perfect backdrop, I got to ride along in the trucks and experience what a normal day on the ranch actually looks like. They took us around the property, introduced us to the cattle, and showed us the work that goes into caring for them every day. It was such a fun and interesting experience getting an up-close look at a way of life that most people don't get the opportunity to see.

From a photography perspective, I loved getting to document the day as it naturally unfolded. Editorial and lifestyle photography is different from a traditional portrait session because the goal isn't to create the moment. It's to anticipate it and be ready when it happens. The cattle, ranchers, equipment, landscape, and everyday work all became part of telling a larger story about life on a Missouri cattle ranch.

The ranch itself also made an incredible backdrop. Photographing people in the environment where they actually live and work adds something to an image that can't really be staged. The land, cattle, trucks, and working areas weren't simply backgrounds for the photographs. They were part of the story and helped show what a day at Weigand Ranch really feels like.

One of my favorite things about photography is that it continues to put me in places I might never experience otherwise. I went into this opportunity excited to take pictures and left with a much greater appreciation for the work that goes into running a cattle ranch.

And the most exciting part is still to come. Some of my photographs from Weigand Ranch will be published in the September issue of Missouri Life Magazine! Seeing my work in the magazine is something I'm incredibly excited about, and I'm grateful I had the opportunity to help visually tell this family's story.
